Taraxacum, commonly known as dandelion, is native to Eurasia and North America and today is found as commonplace wild flower worldwide. Historically, dandelion was prized for a variety of medicinal properties, and it contains a wide number of pharmacologically active compounds. Dandelion has been used as an herbal remedy in Europe, North America and China to treat infections, intestinal gas, upset stomach, bile and liver problems. Dandelion root is a registered drug in Canada, sold principally as a diuretic. In herbal medicine it is used as a mild laxative, for increasing appetite, for improving digestion and as skin toner, blood tonic, and digestive tonic. The milky latex has been used as a mosquito repellent and as a folk remedy to treat warts. With very low or even no toxicity at all, its infusion can be drunk on daily basis.
